About Me

Emma McCormack

Emma McCormack

Counsellor and Psychotherapist

I am a professionally qualified counsellor and psychotherapist, and a member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). I work under the IACP code of ethics and practice. I trained with the Institute of Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy in Tallaght and graduated with a Professional Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy. Since graduating, I have worked extensively with both adolescents and adult clients as I am currently undertaking my Masters in Adolescent Psychotherapy.

I work from an integrative humanistic perspective incorporating Person Centred Therapy and Reality Therapy/Choice Theory (a form of CBT). The therapeutic relationship that is built up with my client in a safe environment, gives the client the space to feel free to explore themselves and the life that they want. My approach is client-led with client input and feedback a central part of our work together. I work flexibly, assessing what therapeutic approach will be most useful at different stages of the therapeutic process. Choice Theory/Reality Therapy is an effective form of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT). The basic premises of CBT is that the thoughts that we choose directly affect our feelings and drives our behaviour. By using Choice Theory/Reality Therapy a client can modify their thoughts to lead a confident, happy and more fulfilling life.

Adult Counselling

We often find it helpful to talk to a family member or friend when something is troubling us, but sometimes friends and family can’t help us and we may need to talk to a professional. Talking about our thoughts and feelings can help us work out what is bothering us and to explore what we can do about the situation. Talking therapies help people to take greater control of their lives and to improve their confidence and self-esteem.

There are a number of different types of counselling approaches available, some focusing on thoughts, others on feelings, some on behaviour and other’s on a combination of these. At Ginkgo Tree Counselling we believe that it’s important for the therapist to work with the client in a way that suits them individually. The relationship that is built up over time between the client and the counsellor is paramount to the way we work and the success of the counselling process. Within each of us is our true self, that will be awakened through the process of counselling and psychotherapy.

Adolescent Psychotherapy

Ginkgo Tree Counselling provides specialist one on one counselling and psychotherapy to adolescents aged 11 to 24 years. Adolescents successfully meet most of the challenges posed by the various stages of their development. However when adolescents are unable to do so, problems may manifest themselves through difficulties in relationships, in learning and behaviour.

At Ginkgo Tree Counselling we work with the young person and their parents to explore their concerns around various issues in a safe non-judgemental space. The issues affecting young people vary from adolescent to adolescent. They include:

  • Family issues
  • Self harm
  • Bullying
  • Issues around self-esteem
  • Anxiety
  • Bereavement
  • Parental seperation/family break up
  • Depression

Throughout our sessions adolescents learn different techniques and discover inner strengths to help them to deal with whatever life throws at them.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is a question that a lot of people ask and the difference between both can be subtle. Both terms are often used interchangeably these days. In the context of mental health “Counselling” generally refers to more short term work where the focus is on dealing with a particular issue or situation in your life right now. “Psychotherapy” on the other hand, often involves longer term work focusing on gaining insight into how we think and are in the world.

About the Ginkgo Tree

The ginkgo tree is a unique species of tree that has been cultivated in China for a long time. It is the oldest living tree species dating back over 200 million years. The trees are traditionally planted in temples in China and Japan, where they have been carefully nurtured and tended by Buddhist monks for their longevity and medicinal properties. The ginkgo tree is a symbol of longevity and the unity of body, mind and spirit.

At Ginkgo Tree Counselling this special tree represents the careful nurturing that the client receives from the counsellor in a safe and supportive one to one setting. We aim to facilitate the work of self-discovery and to assist the individual in awakening their sense of inner strength and empowerment to live the life that they want.
